René L. Kobler, Vize-Präsident von Dark-Sky Switzerland hat den Galileopreis 2004 gewonnen. Der Galileo-Umweltschutzpreis wird jährlich von der International Dark-Sky Association für aussergewöhnliche Leistungen zum Schutz des Nachthimmels in Europa vergeben. Der Galileopreis ist die höchste Auszeichnung, die in Europa zum Schutz des Nachthimmels vergeben wird.
Kobler nahm den Preis anlässlich des 4. Europäischen Symposiums zum Schutz des Nachtimmels in Paris entgegen. Er ist massgeblich dafür verantwortlich, dass die ersten Kantone und viele Gemeinden nun konkrete Massnahmen zum Schutz des Nachthimmels unternehmen. Seine Fähigkeit Probleme bis zur Ursache zu analysieren, konstruktive Lösungen zu finden und diese entsprechend zu kommunizieren, bringt im ‚Verbündete und keine Feinde‘ zur Vermeidung von Lichtverschmutzung.

René Kobler, vice-president of Dark-Sky Switzerland, has won the 2004 IDA Europe Galileo award for his tireless efforts in the protection of night skies and controlling light pollution. The Galileo Award is given once per year by the International Dark-Sky Association for outstanding achievements in Europe.
Kobler is originally an architect by profession and was confronted first with light pollution while photographing the night-sky in the Swiss Alps. He decided to focus entirely on light pollution and quit his job to study environmental engineering and science to obtain a postgraduate degree in this field.
He is currently building an expert center for light pollution at the Institute of Environmental Technology in the Canton of Basel. The aim is also to better understand the multidisciplinary aspects of the effects of light pollution and to further develop strategies for its prevention.
His ability to analyze problems to the base, find constructive solutions, and to communicate them accordingly wins him ‘allies, not enemies‘.
